Renewed Telephone Scam
Box Elder County Sheriff 52 S 1000 W,PO Box 888 Brigham City, UT 84302 For Emergencies Dial 9-1-1 | | | SERIOUS TELEPHONE SCAM | | The following telephone scam is repeating itself. About a year ago we notified the public of a telephone scam where the caller identifies themselves as a Deputy from the Box Elder County Sheriff's Office. They are actually using legitimate names and legitimate titles of currently employed Deputies.
The scam consists of either a warrant has been issued for their arrest or that they have missed jury duty. To fix the problem they are to immediately provide a specific amount of money to keep themselves out of jail. They will ask for immediate payment in a variety of ways such as credit card or to stay on the line and go purchase gift cards and then provide them with the number from the purchased cards.
It cannot be stressed enough that a Deputy from Box Elder County Sheriff will not call you on the phone and demand a bail settlement. If there is a warrant for your arrest or if there is a summons issued for missing jury duty you will receive a knock at your door; likely by a uniformed Deputy.
Upon receiving a phone call of this variety please respond by asking the Deputy calling to come to your door and then call our Dispatch Center at 435-723-6890 and request to speak with the identified Deputy.
This is a renewed warning first sent out on March 28, 2017.
It cannot be stressed enough that no law enforcement agencies, of any kind, will conduct business in this fashion. Ignore these calls.
Box Elder County Sheriff, on occasion, will send a person failing to appear in court on a civil debt correspondence by mail. This letter will be on official Box Elder County Sheriff letterhead requesting you to contact our office and speak to a specific Deputy or Sergeant.
