Joseph Mariani Appointed Lompoc Police Chief
Lompoc Police Department 107 Civic Center Plaza Lompoc, California 93436 For Emergencies Dial 9-1-1 Press Release | Lompoc City Manager Jim Throop announced he has appointed Capt. Joseph Mariani as chief of the Lompoc Police Department.
Mariani is set to officially take the position this Friday, March 1. A public swearing in is expected to take place at the next regular Lompoc City Council meeting on Tuesday, March 5.
Mariani was selected to take over for Walsh, who in January announced his resignation from the police department which he has overseen since September 2014. Walsh plans to stay on in the leadership role until Mariani becomes chief this Friday.
Notably, Mariani will be the Lompoc Police Department’s first Hispanic and bilingual police chief.
In September 2015, Mariani came out of retirement from his 34-year career with the Los Angeles Police Department to serve as a captain with the Lompoc Police Department: first as the operations division commander, and more recently as the support services commander.
Mariani worked a variety of assignments within the Los Angeles Police Department, including patrol officer, narcotics officer, D.A.R.E officer, vice officer, internal affairs investigator, detective, sergeant, lieutenant and captain. Beginning in 2007, Mariani managed the recruitment and hiring process for the Los Angeles Police Department. During his tenure, the police department attained an authorized strength of 10,000 officers for the first time in the department’s history.
In addition, Mariani has been a member of numerous professional organizations including the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
Mariani said he is pleased and grateful for the opportunity to serve as Lompoc police chief.
“I was fortunate to serve under Chief Walsh, and to benefit from his leadership and compassion. Chief Walsh has made an enormous contribution to and difference in the City of Lompoc, and we are all much better because of his efforts,” Mariani said. “It is my hope and desire to continue to serve our community, and to work in collaboration with all who live, work and visit our great city.”
Walsh said he has been honored to serve the Lompoc community, and believes Lompoc is in good hands with Mariani at the helm.
“I could not be happier that Joe Mariani is stepping into the police chief role,” Walsh said. “Joe is an exceptional leader, his experience and knowledge of law enforcement are vast, and he will serve the Lompoc Police Department well."
